Evaporative Cooling Systems for Industrial & Commercial Buildings

Looking for a more efficient way to cool your workplace? Evaporative cooling offers a low-energy, high-performance alternative to traditional air conditioning – ideal for warehouses, production areas, and large industrial spaces.

At Inergy Group, we specialise in the design, installation, and maintenance of evaporative cooling systems, helping businesses cut energy costs, improve working conditions, and support sustainability goals.

What Is Evaporative Cooling?

Evaporative cooling is a natural process that reduces air temperature using water and airflow. As warm air passes through water-saturated cooling pads, the water evaporates — removing heat and releasing cool, fresh air into the space.

There are no harmful refrigerants, no high-energy compressors, and no recycled air. Just a simple, low-cost method of delivering comfortable indoor conditions using 100% fresh air.

How Does Evaporative Cooling Work?

In a typical system, warm air is drawn in by a fan and passed through damp pads inside the cooling unit. The water in the pads evaporates, absorbing heat from the air. The cooled air is then distributed into the building, providing effective ventilation and comfort.

There are two common types:

  • Direct evaporative cooling – simple and efficient, but increases humidity slightly

  • Indirect or two-stage cooling – pre-cools air without increasing humidity, then applies direct cooling for improved performance

This makes evaporative systems ideal for spaces with high heat loads, open doors, or regular air changes.

How Is It Different from Air Conditioning?

Unlike traditional air conditioning, which recirculates air and uses chemical refrigerants, evaporative cooling introduces fresh air and uses water as its cooling medium. It uses up to 90% less electricity and improves indoor air quality while reducing your carbon footprint.

Evaporative Cooling - FAQS

Where Can Evaporative Cooling Be Used?

These systems work best in large, open, or semi-open spaces, including:

  • Warehouses and logistics centres

  • Food and beverage production facilities

  • Workshops and automotive garages

  • Leisure and sports centres

  • Manufacturing plants

For a real-world example, see our Brilliant Breezair case study to learn how we helped a plastics company improve air quality and reduce operating costs.

Is an industrial evaporative air cooling system suitable for the UK climate?

Yes – evaporative cooling works well in many parts of the UK, especially in large, open industrial spaces where air changes and ventilation are already high. While it’s most efficient in low to moderate humidity, modern systems (including indirect and two-stage models) are designed to perform even in more variable UK conditions.

What’s the difference between direct and indirect evaporative cooling?

Direct evaporative cooling passes air through water-soaked pads, reducing temperature but increasing humidity slightly. Indirect evaporative cooling pre-cools air via a heat exchanger without adding moisture. Two-stage systems combine both for greater efficiency and lower humidity – ideal for indoor industrial environments.

How do I know if evaporative cooling is right for my building?

Evaporative cooling is ideal for high-ceiling, open-plan, or semi-ventilated buildings – such as warehouses, factories, workshops, and food production sites. If you need cost-effective cooling, frequent fresh air, and energy savings, it’s worth considering. Our team can assess your site and recommend the best solution.

How Often Should Evaporative Cooling Be Serviced?

We recommend servicing your system at least once a year – or twice annually in high-use or high-dust environments. Servicing keeps your system clean, efficient, and safe, with benefits including:

  • Consistent cooling performance

  • Clean airflow and reduced bacteria risk

  • Reduced limescale and mineral build-up

  • Compliance with health and safety standards

Our team handles routine maintenance, system checks, and full performance testing – so you can focus on running your business.

➡️ For safety, we follow HSE guidance on Legionella control in cooling systems, ensuring all systems are maintained responsibly and in line with UK regulations.
